Macau casinos target Indian and Middle Eastern tourists

Macau, the only region in China where casinos are allowed, is successfully recovering from the lifting of COVID restrictions. To further increase the flow of tourists, Macau will focus on the markets of India and the Middle East.

This decision was made at a recent plenary session of the Legislative Assembly. According to the Minister of Economy and Finance, until 2019, Macau was developing and succeeding in expanding the Indian tourist market. The authorities are also interested in attracting Middle Eastern visitors.

However, the transition will not be easy because of differences in culture and cuisine. So says Professor Zeng Zhonglu of the Gambling Research Group at Macao Polytechnic University. He noted, India has a large population, although per capita income is relatively low. If we can attract some high-income groups to Macau, the number will be significant.

The professor believes that an important factor in successfully attracting visitors from India and the Middle East will be how Macau transcends cultural and language barriers. However, according to the expert, the region’s proximity to Hong Kong International Airport will facilitate Macau’s plans.

Talking about the Middle Eastern market, the professor noted its great potential to attract big players. If successful, it will be profitable for Macau, Zen said.

The Chinese enclave is also working to expand cooperation with Hong Kong International Airport. The new plan calls for passengers to be able to pick up their luggage directly in Macau, bypassing Hong Kong’s immigration service. The possibility of sending luggage by land or sea is being considered.

Meanwhile, gross gaming revenue in the U.K. is up 5% year-over-year.
